The Early Years at Copthill

Our Early Years classes provide the ideal start to school life in a safe yet stimulating environment.

'Early Years' at Copthill incorporates the Nursery, the Pre-School class for 3 to 4 year olds and the Reception classes; a structure that works well in ensuring an anxiety-free transition into the Main School, which start at Year 1.

The quality of care and teaching provides very firm foundations for pupils throughout the Early Years and makes for a smooth transition into the full time education whether at Copthill or beyond.

Our Early Years setting provides a nurturing, secure and stimulating environment for children at a crucial stage in their educational development. At the very foundations of the school is a family orientated community in a rural farming area which is infiltrated throughout our ethos. We are fortunate to have extensive outdoor environments and an array of different habitats that provide invaluable learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum both inside and outside the classroom.

The ISI inspection report, June 2014 rated our provision as ‘outstanding’ stating that we have,  ‘A richly resourced environment, both indoors and outside, encouraging independent learning, problem solving and critical thinking. The school’s ‘Forest School’ provision is a significant strength’.

The Early Years staff encourage our ‘open door’ policy as we feel that communication with parents and carers is paramount to the happiness and successes of all our children. We support our children and their families resulting in a partnership to provide the best possible opportunities and outcomes for each unique child. Our ‘Key Worker’ system means that every child will thrive from forming positive relationships with adults in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.

The structure of the provision ensures that all children, regardless of their age, receive an individual learning programme based upon their interests and relative age and stage of development. Our dedicated, committed and highly skilled staff are trained to provide stimulating activities based upon the observations of each child and their assessments of the child’s attainment, planning appropriate ‘Next steps’ for development. We follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and continuous assessments are carried out resulting in the Early Learning Goals at the end of the Reception. The transition from Nursery through to Reception and ultimately into the school is smooth as the children know all the staff well and naturally progress to the next stage.

We positively encourage visitors to the school so that you can experience our extensive curriculum and variety of facilities .

We very much look forward to welcoming you
