Structure and sessions
The Early Years department is attached to the rest of the school. Pupils in the Early Years are able to enjoy the facilities of the school and also the expertise of the staff. We have experienced and specialist music, ballet, French and PE teachers and in the Reception classes, the pupils can join in many extracurricular clubs after school.
We accommodate nursery pupils from the age of 2 years old. We have experienced and highly qualified staff to cater for the needs of all our pupils. The staff ratio to pupils is 1:4 to ensure all pupils are nurtured and cared for. Our 2 year olds have their own purpose built outdoor area, and regularly use the forest and outdoor areas for learning through play and exploring.
Our Pre-school classes are taken by a fully qualified teacher with Early Years professional teaching status. The structure of the pupils within the department relates primarily to the respective age and stage of development of each individual child. Each pupil has a specialised learning plan based on their interests and next steps for development. Every pupil is assessed frequently to ensure the best possible learning outcomes across all curriculum areas. The emphasis is on enjoyment and the love of learning, which is at the heart of everything that we do. The Pre-school teacher is supported by many highly qualified Early Years practitioners. When they are ready, the Pre-school pupils will have the opportunity to learn their letter sounds through our highly successful Read, Write, Inc. scheme.
Pre-school pupils experience a number of Forest School sessions a week with our specialist staff.
Pupils enter our Reception classes in the academic year that they become 5. We have 2 small Reception classes both led by experienced and fully qualified teachers, each with full time teaching assistants. Our Reception pupils are fully integrated with the rest of the school and use the staff and facilities on offer to all pupils. We enjoy Forest School sessions every week and experience, French, PE and music with specialist teachers.
The pupils continue the Read, Write, Inc. scheme which has resulted in exceptional standards of reading, writing and spelling over the past few years.
Pupils may attend any combination of sessions, subject to availability. We recommend Nursery pupils should attend a minimum of 2 mornings to ensure that they settle in to the routine quickly. We recommend that Pre-school pupils attend at least 3 full days, to ensure a gradual increase prior to entry in to our full time Reception classes.
The pupils experience healthy, well balanced meals freshly cooked on site. The Early Years staff eat with the pupils to encourage social interaction, the enjoyment of experiencing a variety of foods and good table manners.
In addition to the normal school term, pupils in the Early Years department may attend optional extended weeks. These are published on this website under ‘School dates’ and include all published half terms, an additional week at Christmas and Easter and 5 weeks in the Summer holidays. Our holiday club sessions are planned and led by our experienced, qualified staff.
