The Copthill curriculum aims to take pupils’ National Curriculum levels of attainment above those expected nationally by the end of Year 2 and Year 6.
The pupils enjoy a comprehensive range of academic and extra-curricular activities. Class sizes are a maximum of 20 pupils up to Year 4. Due to setting in Years 5 and 6, a flexible arrangement allows us to increase class sizes to a maximum of 22 pupils. This enables pupils to receive the best possible attention from Teachers and Assistants.
Over and above the National Curriculum, each pupil receives a grounding in the skills of Reasoning. We place a high value on Languages. French is taught from Reception onwards; Spanish, currently taught to year 4, will roll out to all pupils in the main school next year; Latin and Classical Studies begin in Year 5 while Ancient Greek is offered to Year 6 pupils.
In music they are given the opportunity to learn an instrument and to
sing. There is the opportunity to share the experience of performing in the
orchestra or choirs.
In Drama, pupils are involved in annual full stage productions.
On the sports field, pupils are coached intensively in all the major games and have the chance to participate against other schools. Sport plays an important role at
Copthill. The weekly timetable includes a double PE lesson per year-group. All pupils are taught the specialist skills of the following games: cricket, cross-country, football, gymnastics, hockey, kwik cricket, netball,
rounders, rugby and tennis. Sports Days and matches are organised for competitive participation.
In the After School Clubs (usually 25 per term) pupils can start or extend a specific hobby or interest, and they are encouraged to participate in as many clubs as possible.
Homework. A small amount is set daily from Kindergarten onwards. This is initially reading, followed by spellings. By Year 2 pupils receive homework in the core subjects. At the top of the school, pupils are set English, Maths, Science, Geography and History, of an increasing duration.
