Blasting into 2023…

Welcome back! The children returned to school after a busy christmas holidays with tales of presents, Father Christmas, holidays and parties – it sounds like you all had a wonderful break. They have taken on the first week back head on and we have been thrown into a busy timetable and a few changes. Something that has stayed the same is our current topic, we are continuing ‘Zero-to-Hero’, focussing on famous people. Over the next couple of weeks we are going to delving into the life of Neil Armstrong, and visiting the Space Centre next week to consolidate our learning. Being excited is an understatement!!

We got stuck into a class reading comprehension about Neil Armstrong to learn abit about his life. This wasn’t just great for finding out about him, but also was great for our reading and a way for us to learn how to find information in a text to answer questions. We have taught the children to read through the whole text first, then to read the questions before going back to the text to find the answers and highlight them. This makes it easier to find the answers again. Both classes did a brilliant job at this and worked really well as a class.

In maths we have been looking at money, recapping what we already know from prior learning and getting to stuck into making amounts using coins and notes. They remembered a lot from Year 1 which is fab to see. In art the children tackled a more challenging cutting activity than they initially thought it would be. It was great to see them overcome the challenge and produce some lovely winter scenes. As for Forest School, we spent the afternoon looking for animal habitats and then using our knowledge to craete our own for some cuddly woodland animals. A super week 🙂

For this half term’s Independent Explorer Homework, we would really like the children to create a poster or a PowerPoint all about their favourite famous person. They will be able to find out facts using books or magazines from a library or the internet and will then present them to their classmates over the course of this half term. If your child would like to do one, they can bring them in whenever they are done with the final week of this half term being the deadline. It would be great to hear about someone that we haven’t covered in school, but if your child would like to do either Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Hannah Cockroft, Neil Armstrong or Sir David Attenborough then that is absolutely fine 🙂
