Copthill from above!

After a lovely half term break, the children of Year 2 were excited to return to school to find out about their new topics. The overall topic is ‘Neighbourhood Watch’, further topics being fantasy stories in English and statistics in mathematics.

As an introduction to our topic, we talked about each of our local areas but decided because we all live in different places, it would be a good idea to focus on a place where we all are, at the same time, most of the week – school! Our first lesson involved us taking to the skies and comparing an aerial photo of the school when it was fairly new with the Google Earth image of the school as it is today. The children worked in partners to spot the differences and note them down. They did a great job and really enjoyed seeing how the school has developed over the years.

In mathematics we have been looking at how to record information using tally charts. They had a lot of fun asking each other what their favourite animal or food, sport of colour was an recording their findings. In games they have been looking at defending and attacking skills, playing invader games. In music we have continued to practise our recorder skills, don’t forget that you can do this at home as well. In forest school they went exploring around the school grounds using maps to see all of the different features. And in art they were introduced to L.S Lowry who is their artist focus this half term.

As for English, we introduced the topic of Fantasy Stories – they are very excited about this topic of make believe stories and have already worked so hard to show us their prior knowledge of fantasy characters and settings, and for giving examples of fantasy story books that they had read already. At the beginning of the week we had to sort books into fantasy stories and non-fantasy stories. They are so excited to write their own fantasy story…which we aren’t doing in school until the end of term! But, if you would like to have a practise at home, then we aren’t going to stop you! Not at all 🙂 The children really enjoy using the Chromebook’s across all lessons, one phonics group really enjoyed using them to find the definition to words in their spellings and doing an online word search to help them with their spellings.
