Congratulations to Copthill ISA Football Squad who travelled to Southend to compete in the Regional Tournament.
It was a tough start against eventual finalists Langley Prep; but despite conceding in the first half, a change of formation and some Copthill grit kept the second period goalless and spirits high.
In each of the following pool games the performances continued to improve, with plenty of goalmouth action at both ends.
Results were decided on the slimmest of margins, including Joshua’s fierce free kick which hit the post, first Felix, then Moss rising high to tip the ball over the crossbar, Henry’s swerving shot just swinging wide, or Thomas so close to nudging in his second goal at the far post … and all the time our midfield engine room of Kailen, Luke and Yusuf were skilfully covering back and driving us forward.
Having completed our pool matches in the morning we were paired against Saint Pierre School for the afternoon playoff. Saving our best performance until last, Henry opened the scoring as we looked to take control of the game. As so often happens we conceded a late equaliser before the break, but came back out re-energised and went searching for the winner with fresh legs on the pitch. A great second half ensued where both teams came close taking the honours, but the final whistle just came too soon. Should it have been able to go to extra time the Coaches had every confidence in predicting a well deserved win, but in the end the boys finished with heads held high, having played some fantastic and highly entertaining football for themselves, and for our wonderful travelling support. Well done boys !
