The Lower School is a very happy place and offers a broad, well-balanced curriculum for pupils of Reception age to Year 3.
We place a strong emphasis on the importance of literacy and numeracy and our robust theme-based educational programme uses the foundations of the national curriculum. Specialist teachers in modern foreign languages, music, physical education and dance ensure that our pupils receive the best possible teaching across all areas of the Copthill curriculum.
Our pupils benefit from a curriculum tailored to their interests, needs and next steps for learning. We find that Copthill’s rural farming location and diversity of outdoor learning spaces provide innovative and unique opportunitites for pupils to access all areas of the timetable, in memorable and practical ways.
Carefully planned teaching and learning activities, alongside ongoing assessment opportunities, provide a seamless transition for every pupil progressing from the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) through to the end of Key Stage One (Year 2) and into Lower Key Stage Two (Year 3).
The Early Years’ ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ are reinforced and are extended through our focus on the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the ‘Copthill Learner’. This ensures that every pupil can become a responsible citizen, independent explorer, creative thinker, problem solver, team player and reflective learner.
