The Great Fire at Copthill

What a great half term this one has been. The children of Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed learning about their topic of ‘famous people’ and finding out about each one’s achievements and events that took place during their lives. They have also really enjoyed writing this weekly blog for you, sharing their new found knowledge with you.

As a way to round of the topic we decided that we would re-enact the Great Fire of London here at Copthill. At the beginning of term, we asked that the children spend the next few weeks building a Tudor house so that we could recreate the streets of London and have a fire of our own. The level of houses that came in to school made it very difficult for us to burn them, but we reassured everyone – including ourselves – that it was for a great educational purpose, to see what would have to houses if they had not pulled some down to create spaces between houses, and to see what effect doing that had on the spread of the fire. Plus, the children were VERY excited so we absolutely had to go ahead with it! It went brilliantly!

The children of Year 2 were also very excited this week to take part in a mini stampede during their games lesson, following suit of the upper school and their cross country house race. Well done to all those who were involved. We hope you have a wondering half term break and we look forward to seeing you back next week after a well deserved rest.
