The flurries of snow became heavier as we drove to Ratcliffe College, but happily their Astro was still blue when we arrived, and the boys were excited to crack on with their U10A game.
As expected our opponents played some lovely controlled and expansive hockey, having the majority of the early possession. Gradually Copthill grew into their task, our movement improved and our passing game returned. It was a very even game until the deadlock was broken just before half time; Ratcliffe camped in our D, managed a series of scrambled shots, the last one evading a diving Ronan.
Perhaps a sign of how far the team has come this term was their response. There was an audible and visible uplift in personal endeavour and teamwork, despite the now miserable conditions. The third quarter came and went, but still no reward for our hard work and possession. Finally, the fourth quarter, everything we have practiced so hard for came together; a strong defence inspired counter attack, a calm intelligent pass from midfield, a driving left wing carry and cross, a pre-positioned target man deflecting the ball back in front of goal, and there was Joshua, anticipating the move, to serve up a sweet finish ! Lovely hockey! We finished strong and very much deserved 1-1 score line against a great opposition who always bring the best out of us. Well done boys! Finally a thank you to our travelling support who braved the elements for us!
