A warm welcome (literally) to Year 4!

Well, what a warm start to the 2023/24 academic year we’ve
had! Year 4 have settled back into the swing of school-life
extremely well, despite the high temperatures, and adapted
to their new routines with confidence. There was a new face
in class 4M on the first day back, as Miss Welch has joined
Copthill for her university placement year.

After the initial excited chatter died down, term began! We
started the week off with some fun welcome back activities,
hearing about all the students’ lovely summer holidays,
before getting down to the nitty-gritty of number values,
spellings and balanced arguments. However, year 4 have
absolutely embraced their lessons and are thoroughly
enjoying getting back to work, especially their times tables
and touch-typing practice on their Chromebook. It’s lovely to
see how much reading they’ve all been doing over the
summer holidays! David Walliams has been a popular choice.

We have been focusing on our school value of
‘Responsibility’. Form Captains have been appointed, and
different roles have been assigned to many children, who
have been fulfilling their responsibilities fantastically. This
week, School Council elections have also taken place across
all year groups. The candidates were each asked to write a
manifesto, which they presented in class, and on Thursday all
the students went down to the ‘polling station’ in the library
and cast their votes! It has been very exciting.

We have started our ‘Law and Order, Rules and Rights’ topic
enthusiastically and we are looking forward to developing the
children’s debating skills over this half term – so just a
warning to be prepared to justify your opinions on various
issues at home! The children have participated in some
whole year group activities around the concept of leadership
and have thought about how to present a balanced
argument. Arguments seemed to lean towards robots
replacing teachers, so we may be out of a job soon!

It’s been a great start to the term, and we are looking
forward to a fun packed year!
