Chinese New Year Celebrations!

There was great excitement at the beginning of the week as our Read, Write, Inc helper “Fred the Frog” turned five years old and had a birthday party! We had many exciting activities in maths weighing all the things that we had for his birthday party and putting them in order from the heaviest to the lightest. We weighed all the toys that he had received for his birthday too. We used lots of comparative language such as, heavier than and lighter than. Good work Reception! We decided not to have some birthday cake as the children thought that it might be “Fly Cake”!

We have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We have learnt about how the festival is celebrated around the world, the foods that are eaten and the clothes worn. We even tried a little dragon dancing! In maths we learnt number bonds to ten using Chinese dragon and lantern counters. We are really great at recording our own sums.

We also learnt about the story behind the Lunar Calendar and why each year is named after a different animal. We acted out the story of “The Race” outside with our animal masks. Some lovely art work of lanterns, dragons and painted Chinese numerals were also produced.
