Going WILD!

I can’t believe we have reached the last topic of Year 2 – where has the time gone?! The topics covered over the course of the year have been super fun and thoroughly enjoyed by all of the children, and we are finishing on a ‘wild’ one learning all about animals. We have continued our learning from year 1 and over the course of the half term will be looking at endangered and extinct animals, making animal profiles and the classification of animal groups.

This week we based our English lessons around our senses – we use our senses constantly to help us throughout the day and talked about how senses are really important to animals too. We played games throughout the week to test our sight, hearing, touch and to test our memories. This was a lot of fun. A memory game, a blind drawing activity (one blindfolded and the other drawing a picture on the back of the blindfolded partner, then they had to draw what they could feel) and a listening ‘guess who?’ game. This also tested our knowledge of different animal diets, habitats and appearance.

The children blew us away during their art lesson this week. Miss Gardner set the really tricky challenge to draw the other half of an animals face. The children had to think about perspective and detail – they understood the assignment, absolutely smashing it with their artwork. They are proud to see their work up on display in the Year 2 ‘jungle’ corridor.

Then in creative curriculum we were busy sorting animals into the correct animal groups, looking at what makes them mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, insects and amphibians. They later went on to create their own animal, picking a part from each classification e.g. wings from birds, hair from a lion/mammal, webbed feet from amphibians, scaly skin from reptiles and gills from fish. They had a lot of fun and were really creative with their animals!

Next week we have our trip to Hamerton Zoo (Monday 12th June) and are super excited. An email will be sent out with information about what you will need. Please bear in mind that it is going to be nice and sunny on Monday and we are going to be outside for the majority of the day so long lasting sun cream and sunhats are a must and maybe shorts rather than joggers. Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to Monday’s excitement.
