Life in the trenches…

Year 6 have had an incredible immersive history experience this morning in Copthill’s very own WW1 trenches. Led by Sergeant Willson, Captain Teesdale, Field chefs Ralph and Campbell and Corporal Hesford, the children marched to the front line. There, they completed different soldier tasks of field hosptial work, rescuing and treating casualties using stretchers and field medical equipment; preparing trench stew using wartime ingredients and digging and barricading further trench sections. This was then followed by a 10.30am call to ‘go over the top’ amidst the oncoming gunfire, shells and gas (thank you Mr Teesdale, Mr Teesdale and Mr Teesdale!). The children thought about how it would have felt leading up to this moment and the devastation of seeing just how few of their comrades returned. Immersive learning at its finest! What a wonderful opportunity for our independent explorers.
