Life in the trenches…

Year 6 have finished their WW1 topic this term by spending an afternoon in Copthill’s very own trenches.

Led my Sergeant Major Willson, Lieutenant Hesford and Captain Teesdale, the troops (carrying heavy spades) marched across tricky terrain to the trenches where they laboured like real soldiers filling their own sandbags and laying wire protection. They endured ‘gas attacks’ and were surrounded by the constant onslaught of the sounds of shelling and loud bangs though they had their wireless radios providing welcome relief. At dawn, they went over the top and reflected on just how dangerous a mission this was and sadly, how many soldiers fell.
