Pirate Ships

In Year 2 this week we have been looking at materials, linking it with our topic of pirates and in particular pirate ships. The children have been bringing into school their amazing pirate ships for their Independent Explorer homework over the past few weeks (you still have time before half term to bring yours in if you are still working on yours at home).

We used our prior knowledge of materials to think about suitable materials when building boats. In our creative curriculum lessons this week we worked in table teams to design and build a ship using junk recycling – cardboard boxes, plastic milk bottles, tin foil, polystyrene packaging, paper and plasticine – the children had to work together to design a raft that would be able to float on water. They worked really well together in their teams and shared their ideas well, taking it in turns to add pieces to their rafts. They had to make predictions as to what their raft would do and explain why they chose to use the materials e.g. plastic is waterproof, finishing with a conclusion of what happened.

Don’t forget about our Pirate Day in Year 2 on Tuesday 11th October – please come in to school in fancy dress.
